From 8b4ff8b6a14096a28910fbff3d485f30dcb9a637 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Bruce Momjian <bruce@momjian.us> Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2007 19:10:30 +0000 Subject: [PATCH] Wording cleanup for error messages. Also change can't -> cannot. Standard English uses "may", "can", and "might" in different ways: may - permission, "You may borrow my rake." can - ability, "I can lift that log." might - possibility, "It might rain today." Unfortunately, in conversational English, their use is often mixed, as in, "You may use this variable to do X", when in fact, "can" is a better choice. Similarly, "It may crash" is better stated, "It might crash". --- contrib/spi/autoinc.c | 4 ++-- contrib/spi/insert_username.c | 6 +++--- contrib/spi/moddatetime.c | 6 +++--- contrib/spi/refint.c | 8 ++++---- contrib/spi/timetravel.c | 4 ++-- contrib/tsearch2/dict_thesaurus.c | 4 ++-- contrib/tsearch2/tsvector.c | 2 +- doc/src/sgml/ecpg.sgml | 8 ++++---- doc/src/sgml/gin.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/installation.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/lobj.sgml | 14 ++++++------- doc/src/sgml/maintenance.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/perform.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/plperl.sgml | 6 +++--- doc/src/sgml/queries.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/ref/create_function.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/ref/create_rule.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/ref/create_trigger.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/ref/initdb.sgml | 6 +++--- doc/src/sgml/ref/notify.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/ref/psql-ref.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/ref/rollback_to.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/ref/select.sgml | 6 +++--- doc/src/sgml/release.sgml | 6 +++--- doc/src/sgml/rules.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/sources.sgml | 10 ++++----- doc/src/sgml/spi.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/sql.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/syntax.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/typeconv.sgml | 6 +++--- doc/src/sgml/xfunc.sgml | 4 ++-- doc/src/sgml/xoper.sgml | 4 ++-- src/backend/access/gist/gistxlog.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/access/hash/hashscan.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/access/nbtree/nbtxlog.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/access/transam/xact.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/access/transam/xlog.c | 6 +++--- src/backend/catalog/aclchk.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/catalog/dependency.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/catalog/index.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/catalog/namespace.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/commands/cluster.c | 6 +++--- src/backend/commands/comment.c | 12 +++++------ src/backend/commands/dbcommands.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/commands/indexcmds.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/commands/opclasscmds.c | 6 +++--- src/backend/commands/portalcmds.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/commands/schemacmds.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/commands/sequence.c | 6 +++--- src/backend/commands/tablespace.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/commands/user.c | 6 +++--- src/backend/commands/vacuum.c | 14 ++++++------- src/backend/executor/execQual.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/optimizer/plan/initsplan.c | 6 +++--- src/backend/optimizer/util/clauses.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/parser/analyze.c | 24 +++++++++++----------- src/backend/parser/gram.y | 4 ++-- src/backend/parser/parse_agg.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/parser/parse_clause.c | 8 ++++---- src/backend/parser/parse_func.c | 8 ++++---- src/backend/parser/parse_oper.c | 6 +++--- src/backend/port/dynloader/aix.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/regex/rege_dfa.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/rewrite/rewriteDefine.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/rewrite/rewriteHandler.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/storage/buffer/bufmgr.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/storage/lmgr/lock.c | 10 ++++----- src/backend/utils/adt/genfile.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/utils/adt/int.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/utils/adt/int8.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/utils/fmgr/funcapi.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/utils/init/miscinit.c | 4 ++-- src/backend/utils/misc/guc.c | 6 +++--- src/bin/initdb/initdb.c | 8 ++++---- src/bin/pg_ctl/pg_ctl.c | 6 +++--- src/bin/pg_dump/pg_backup_archiver.c | 4 ++-- src/bin/pg_resetxlog/pg_resetxlog.c | 4 ++-- src/bin/psql/startup.c | 4 ++-- src/include/regex/regerrs.h | 4 ++-- src/interfaces/ecpg/preproc/ecpg.c | 6 +++--- src/interfaces/ecpg/preproc/preproc.y | 4 ++-- src/interfaces/libpq/win32.c | 6 +++--- src/pl/plperl/plperl.c | 6 +++--- src/pl/plpgsql/src/gram.y | 4 ++-- src/pl/plpgsql/src/pl_comp.c | 4 ++-- src/pl/plpython/plpython.c | 12 +++++------ src/pl/tcl/pltcl.c | 4 ++-- src/test/examples/testlo.c | 14 ++++++------- src/test/regress/expected/alter_table.out | 2 +- src/test/regress/expected/create_view.out | 4 ++-- src/test/regress/expected/geometry.out | 2 +- src/test/regress/expected/horology.out | 2 +- src/test/regress/expected/privileges.out | 2 +- src/test/regress/expected/rangefuncs.out | 2 +- src/test/regress/expected/time.out | 2 +- src/test/regress/expected/timetz.out | 2 +- src/test/regress/expected/transactions.out | 6 +++--- src/test/regress/expected/triggers.out | 2 +- src/test/regress/pg_regress.c | 6 +++--- src/test/regress/regress.c | 8 ++++---- src/test/thread/thread_test.c | 4 ++-- src/timezone/zic.c | 14 ++++++------- src/tools/entab/entab.c | 4 ++-- 103 files changed, 274 insertions(+), 274 deletions(-) diff --git a/contrib/spi/autoinc.c b/contrib/spi/autoinc.c index 5904f1f4312..c748b6bf1c7 100644 --- a/contrib/spi/autoinc.c +++ b/contrib/spi/autoinc.c @@ -31,7 +31,7 @@ autoinc(PG_FUNCTION_ARGS) elog(ERROR, "not fired by trigger manager");
